Coloradoans love their sports, and while it’s only a short drive to Denver to watch many professional teams compete at the highest level, there are also many opportunities to watch great teams right here in Weld County.

Northern Colorado Nightmare – District 6 Stadium, 100 71st Ave., Greeley

A minor league football team right here in Weld County! In their eighth season, the Nightmare features a roster full of players from Denver and northern Colorado, with several having played at Weld County high schools including Platte Valley, Roosevelt and more. With home games played at District 6 Stadium — or “The Boneyard” as the Nightmare has named it — during a season that typically runs from May until August, there are many opportunities to watch the Nightmare battle teams throughout the region in pursuit of a Championship Football League title! The Northern Colorado Owlz compete in the Pioneer Baseball League, a professional partner league of Major League Baseball. See some great young players, many coming off solid college careers, develop their skills in a season that stretches from late May to early October. Northern Colorado Rain FC – 2024 marks the first season for the Northern Colorado Rain, a pre-professional women’s soccer team competing in the Mountain Division of the Women’s United Soccer League (USL). Many members of the Rain are Colorado natives, with experience playing high-level soccer at the collegiate level. In the Mountain Division, the Rain take on other teams from across the Front Range during a summer season that lasts from May through June. The Colorado Grit – Ice Haus, 900 8th Ave., Greeley

Hockey has a home in Weld County! The Colorado Grit consists of some of the best junior hockey players nationwide, competing in the North American Hockey League (NAHL). Referred to as a gateway league by many, the NAHL provides young hockey players an opportunity to gain experience they can use as an avenue to minor league hockey or the NCAA. A majority of home games are played at the Ice Haus in downtown Greeley, making Grit games a popular weekend attraction throughout the fall and winter months, in an environment that’s described as both exciting and family friendly. University of Northern Colorado (UNC) Bears

This fall, be sure to cheer on the University of Northern Colorado Bears in Greeley as they compete in many sports. The UNC football team and second-year head coach Ed Lamb look to make a statement in the Big Sky Conference. The women’s volleyball team will look to build off of an 18-12 record from a year ago, and national champion and Weld County native Andrew Alirez returns to the UNC wrestling team.
